College intern Yaritza Perez has been an intern in the City of Indian Wells Finance Department since September 2018. A student at Cal State University San Bernardino, Palm Desert Campus, Yaritza’s studies focus on business administration with a concentration in accounting. Although busy with school, volunteering and work, when she learned of the internship opportunity through a friend, she knew she had to seize the opportunity.
“I’ve always wanted to work in local government, and I had a friend who interned with the City of Indian Wells. He spoke so positively about his internship experience that I jumped at the chance to intern in the Finance Department when the opportunity presented itself,” she said.
Yaritza’s duties in the department include cashiering at the finance reception desk, working on vendor invoices and learning about the accounts payable process within the City.
“With the fiscal year coming to a close, I am looking forward to seeing the transition to a new budget and fiscal year. To have the opportunity to take what I learn in textbooks and put it into practice is truly an invaluable experience,” Yaritza explained.
After graduation this June, Yaritza hopes to find a full-time position in the Riverside area that hopefully entails some travel to other parts of the U.S.
“Having interns in the office allows us to learn as well,” said Ruby Walla, Assistant Finance Director. “Seeing aspects of the job through their eyes is refreshing and allows us to examine our processes and discover ways we can improve.”
The City recruits for interns in the Finance and City Manager Departments by advertising openings in the Career Services Departments at local colleges. Any students with an interest are welcome to apply.
