At the November 7, 2019, City Council meeting, the Grants-in-Aid Committee recommended the Council approve grant funding for 20 local organizations totaling $152,401.54 for fiscal year 2019-2020. The Council unanimously approved this request.
The Grants-in-Aid Committee also recommended the Housing Authority provide homelessness assistance funding totaling $50,000, which was also approved.
The Grants-in-Aid Committee held two education sessions in August to review the program guidelines and application and to answer any application questions. The Committee then received more than 30 grant requests. After a comprehensive analysis of each application, the Committee recommended funding 20 of the applications under the Grants-in-Aid program and four programs using funding allocated for homelessness assistance.
“The City recognizes the importance of community-based organizations and the vital services they provide to the Coachella Valley community,” said Mayor Ted J. Mertens. “The City is honored to have the ability to grant aid to these deserving organizations as they continue their valuable work.”
Organizations that were granted funding include:
Alzheimer’s Association: $9,840 for their Alz Explorers program which provides participants the ability to experience monthly social engagement activities.
American Red Cross: $5,000 for smoke alarm installation and fire escape training under their Home Fire Campaign with the goal of preventing home fire deaths and injuries through preparedness.
Angel View Inc.: $10,000 to go toward their Transportation Capital campaign for the purchase of a replacement vehicle equipped to transport their clients.
Animal Samaritans SPCA: $5,000 for the Adoption Alliance Animal Rescue Program which provides adoptable, at-risk animals with a safe haven until they are adopted.
Assistance League of the Desert: $10,000 for Operation School Bell, which provides new school clothing to low income, at-risk elementary school students in Palm Springs, Desert Sands and CV Unified school districts since 1991.
Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Desert: $7,500 for the Generation to Generation mentoring program which pairs children ages 6-18 with retirees to foster mutually beneficial relationships.
Boys and Girls Clubs of CV: $10,000 for annual memberships for low income families.
Desert Aids Project: $10,000 for the Nutrition Services Program which provides fresh, healthy foodstuffs every week.
Desert Arc: $15,000 for National Association for Information Destruction (NAID) certification.
Desert Best Friend’s Closet: $1,000 for LGBTQ and non-binary clients in the Interview Attire Program.
Desert Cancer Foundation: $10,000 for the Patience Assistance Program which provides financial assistance to uninsured/underinsured cancer patients.
Family YMCA of the Desert: $3,061.54 for supplies for their licensed childcare sites.
Galilee Center, Inc.: $10,000 for weekly food distribution to low-income farm/migrant workers and their families in the east valley.
Gold RiteCare Childhood Language Center: $5,000 to provide no cost speech and language therapy services for children from preschool to high school.
Habitat for Humanity of the Coachella Valley, Inc.: $15,000 for the Housing Insecurity Prevention Program for low-income Coachella Valley individuals and families.
Hidden Harvest: $5,000 for the Senior Markets Project which provides free, fresh produce monthly to low-income seniors.
John F. Kennedy Memorial Foundation dba Ophelia Project: $5,000 for teen mentoring program serving teen girls in 8th through 12th grade.
Loving All Animals: $10,000 for pharmaceutical costs associated with their dog and cat adoption program.
Read with Me Volunteer Programs: $1,000 for the purchase of 200 books to donate to the Read With Me Program at Valley View Elementary School in the City of Coachella.
United Cerebral Palsy of the Inland Empire: $5,000 for the Skill Builders After-School Program which provides after-school care and life-skills coaching to 12 special needs children in the City of La Quinta.
Organizations that were granted funding under the City’s homelessness assistance program include:
Galilee Center: $10,000 for the Our Lady of Guadalupe Shelter which provides lodging and other services to farm/migrant workers and families seeking asylum.
Jewish Family Service of the Desert: $15,000 for the Emergency Financial Assistance Program, a component of their case management program which provides a variety of services designed to ensure long-term housing stability.
Martha’s Village & Kitchen: $17,500 for the Homeless Housing and Wrap-Around Services Program which provides safe shelter and support services to individuals and families in need of a path back to permanent housing and stable incomes.
Coachella Valley Rescue Mission: $7,500 for the Emergency Food & Shelter Program. Additional services include life skills classes, job training, and referrals to additional resources.
